IDENTIFICATION OF BIODEGRADABLE POLYMERS AS CONTAMINANTS IN THE THERMOPLASTICS RECYCLING PROCESS

In this work, the presence of biodegradable polymers in recycled plastic materials was characterized using readily available techniques. Recycled polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were studied. The contamination these plastics with polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) thermoplastic starch (TPS) simulated 10 wt.% contaminant. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) used as characterization addition, effect aging on products from PET blends contaminated TPS PHB results show changes intensity FTIR spectra bands PS PP polymers. By DSC, cold crystallization peak are observed when mixed PHB. When contaminant is PLA, masked due to thermal characteristics both materials. PS, calorimetric curves identified by PLA Contamination hinders processing after one year storage material.
